Leicester Cathedral - October 2014

Visit to Site - 8th October 2014

This week the site meeting coincides with the October meeting of the Fabric Advisory Committee, who come to site to view the full scale design mock-up of the tomb, discuss the appropriate extent of stonework repairs and the satisfy themselves that the new cable routes proposed minimise damage to the historic fabric and visual impact.

We have a good meeting with the FAC, with the committee approving the full scale mock-up of the tomb, samples of its finish on the Swaledale and Kilkenny stones, the joints to be used in the plinth construction and the lettering sample by Gary Breeze. With some minor changes to dimensions we are OK to proceed to manufacture. FAC agree with our cable routes and after discussion we decide that the damage to the bases of the piers and the fixing holes left by the joinery fixings needs to be repaired, but  that where the stone string course and corbel were cut back this is to remain as is.

Another vault is uncovered at the east end, so we start discussing how to best accommodate this.

Meanwhile the joiners use the cleared part of the site to sort out and repair the panelling’s crest moulding which will be retained in the new ambulatory
