Handover of low-energy, 4 storey extension to Leicester Cathedral

Final handover of new Heritage & Learning Centre to Leicester Cathedral after 17yr relationship

🎉 We have now handed over our project at Leicester Cathedral after over 17 years of working together, from a feasibility study and masterplan for the reordering of the Cathedral and its precinct, to including full services and energy upgrade and subsequent 4-storey low-energy extension – not to mention the unexpected reinterment of Richard III in between.

💡The new Heritage and Learning Centre includes a flexible education space, a gallery that explores the heritage of the cathedral in Leicester, and the crucial spaces needed to support the life of a busy civic building which had previously been lacking; visitor toilets, a servery, storage, a volunteers’ base and a vergers’ workroom.

⛪The works have also restored the fabric and renewed the services of the cathedral; making it welcoming and accessible to all, whether worshippers or other visitors, increasing its comfort whilst minimising its carbon footprint, and making it easier to appreciate its heritage. Combined, the works will transform the Cathedral’s Mission, and equip the Cathedral to serve City and County for future generations.

🤲 The centre will officially open to the public on Saturday 14 June 2025, marking a significant milestone in the Cathedral’s history. Renewing and celebrating the cathedral’s historic character, the project enables the building to function as a 21st century cultural space and allow an inclusive contemporary liturgy, in advance of its centenary year in 2027.

The project has been made possible with funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with many other generous funders and donors.

📣 Very Revd Karen Rooms, Dean of Leicester, said:
“This project has restored and renewed this ancient building, and helps us to balance the needs of our services and worship, cultural tourists, school visits, community events, pilgrims, and visitors.”
