Houlton School’s ‘intelligent design’ has been formally recognised by industry bodies this year, as it scooped a total of TWELVE award wins (so far), two commendations, and seven final shortlists – two of which have yet to be announced.
The groundbreaking secondary school project, which one AJ judge described as ‘A wonderful transformation done with intelligence and sensitivity’, won two categories at the Architect Journal’s Retrofit Awards, as well as winning Refurb & Design of the Year at the Architect Journal’s main awards.
Combining careful historical restoration with state of the art new build spaces to serve an emerging community, this project is now seen as an exemplar for retrofitting to deliver public buildings for the future. It also managed to bag the coveted Project of the Year at the Building Awards, a Refurb BDA Brick Award, an RICS Public Sector award and many more!
