New extension for St Mary’s School in Cambridge

We are delighted to announce the completion of our second project for St Mary’s School, with a new extension to their main site.

This continues our work delivering a long-term masterplan we undertook several years ago, with the new extension providing a couple of classrooms and an alternative means of escape for the existing 1920’s teaching block (replacing an open steel stair), as well as refurbishing the interior.

We chose a CLT frame, which minimised site disruption – vital on this very tight, live school campus – and also reduces embodied carbon impacts.

Importantly, the project removed a long and blank lean-to at back of pavement, enabling a more generous landscape to be provided along the narrow street, with places to gather and chat. As the street facades face almost due north, we have reinstated and added to the patterned brick elements, and used a light brick and brass cladding for our little insertion. This will dull down somewhat, but its tone and colour should remain similar.
