Planning in for new Passivhaus primary school

Application submitted for low carbon primary facilities at Houlton to make an all-through school

We are excited to have submitted our planning application for primary facilities at Houlton School,  This will provide two new blocks, playgrounds, and sports facilities for younger children, and turn the existing award-winning secondary school into an all-through school with an age range of 4-18.

The new primary buildings will provide excellent facilities for younger children’s education, within the overall campus,  continuing the ethos that the Transforming Lives Educational Trust (TLET) have created at Houlton School since its opening. The primary building will add to the School’s facilities available for community use, right at the centre of Houlton.

Responding to the welcome aspiration of the brief to achieve the highest level of energy efficiency in operation as possible, our design is intended to achieve Passivhaus certification, and to provide its over 80% of its annual energy demand from its own PVs. Embodied carbon is minimised by using a lean timber structure on an optimised raft foundations, woodfibre insulation, and by careful choice of building components and finishes

It is a pleasure to be working again with Urban&Civic, TLET, and the Houlton School team to deliver the next stage of this forward-thinking development.
