About The Project
Our concept for the Sheffield Hallam University competition in 2011 represents the notion of the university as a community, where learning takes place in a variety of spaces. The new building becomes the focus for the campus and has a strong identity, at the same time as enhancing the setting of the listed house to the north and the surrounding landscape. The vertical organisation of the building is arranged to provide inspiring places, creating subtly different ways in which the building can be used. The open ground floor conceived as a market place, leads onto more private spaces above; stairs in the atrium link the floors in a clear, legible way. The spaces all offer opportunities for chance meetings, informal learning, cross-fertilisation of ideas and social interaction.
