Stoddart Building Competition, Sheffield Hallam University
About The Project
Although we won the competition for the refurbishment of the Stoddart Building, the University then shelved the project. The brief was for a heavy refurbishment of an existing 1980s teaching block. Our proposal was to strip it right back and a full shell and core redesign. Our proposals remove the isolating warren of corridors and inflexible cellular rooms, and convert the internal courtyard into an atrium bringing light and views deep into the plan and unifying all the facilities. These include a mixture of open plan and enclosed rooms with generous social spaces, to provide a more flexible and sociable building for both the students and faculty staff.
