The library building is the first implementation of a masterplan for the long-term redevelopment of the university’s Polhill campus; the location and striking design of the building provides a gateway to the campus. The internal environment is controlled by a building management system as a part of its low-energy strategy. The building is naturally ventilated, and benefits from good use of natural daylight. To help avoid problems of glare and overheating an external timber screen envelops the building from the first-floor up. The screen forms a grand arcade around the building, setting it apart from its neighbours and giving it a clear identity.
