Our competition entry for St Hugh’s College, Oxford created a new focus for the College, with a range of teaching and learning spaces clustered in and around a new atrium. Selective demolition, conservation and adaptation would allow clear circulation and links from the street and the College gardens, and provides a much better JCR and College bar. The number of desk-places in the historic library would be doubled, with a variety of collaborative spaces and a clear entrance. The surrounding buildings would be refurbished and extended to update and extend the residential accommodation without increasing the footprint of the buildings into the gardens. The new facilities would provide an excellent venue for conferences out of term time, with a range of seminar spaces around the social facilities of the atrium, dedicated street access and nearby rooms of high quality.
