South Hampstead Synagogue competition

Our competition entry for South Hampstead Synagogue proposed a new building to replace the existing synagogue on the same site, which would allow for greater fulfilment of the religious and social needs of its Orthodox Community and provide much-needed extra accommodation. The Prayer Hall is the anchor of the design. It occupies the whole upper ground floor; its symbolic importance is reflected in its external appearance. Men and women of the entire congregation are accommodated on one level, separated by a mechitzah in the form of nominal partitions and level changes, resulting in an undulating and embracing floor orientated to the ark and bimah.
