Ysgol Ifor Bach is a Welsh language primary school, nursery and community facility for Caerphilly County Borough Council. Nestled in the Aber valley, the single storey school building is orientated south to take utmost environmental benefit from the sun and the prevailing winds. The children benefit enormously from the natural light filling the classrooms, and both pupils and teachers find it a stimulating environment in which to teach and learn. The design maximises the use of sustainable technologies; using grey water, recycled building materials and sustainable biomass pellets for heating. We believe sustainable design is about more than energy saving but also about creating comfortable and safe environments that contribute to social sustainability.
